Questions about Hintglass

Short answers about Hintglass, a macOS menu-bar app for live video interviews; the guides take each one step by step.

What it is

Isn’t this cheating?

Yes. Next question. Interviews reward whoever memorised the most answers, and now that’s you.

What does Hintglass do?

It transcribes both sides of your video interview on your Mac, and when you hold right ⌥ (Right Option) while the interviewer finishes a question, a short answer appears in a panel just below your notch. Two more shortcuts answer with code for the window in front of you, or with one sourced sentence from a web search.

Will they see it when I share my screen?

No. Hintglass is invisible on screen share and in screenshots. They see your screen, never your answers.

Where do the answers come from?

From your own profile, through the AI provider you connect: what you have done comes only from your profile, search answers also use the web, and code answers read your screen. Hintglass never claims experience your profile doesn’t hold, so every story comes from your own resume and holds up when the follow-up digs deeper.

Does it work with Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams?

Yes. Hintglass works with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and any meeting app on your Mac: pick the one your interview runs in under Settings → Meeting app, and for Google Meet, pick the browser it runs in.

Your data

Does any audio leave my Mac?

No. Both sides of the call are transcribed on your Mac. When you ask, the conversation’s transcript so far, from both sides, and your profile go to your AI provider; ⌥⌘C (Option-Command-C) adds a screenshot of the window in front of you, and ⌥⌘F (Option-Command-F) sends the interviewer’s words to the search service you chose. On Anthropic, Ollama Cloud and Ollama on your Mac, Hintglass also sends a warm-up in the background, even if you never ask: your profile, and on Ollama the conversation’s transcript so far, within a session’s first minute and then once or twice a minute, so the next answer starts faster.

What does Hintglass send, and to whom?

Never your audio: both sides of the call are transcribed on your Mac. When you ask, the conversation’s transcript so far, from both sides, and your profile go to your AI provider; ⌥⌘C adds a screenshot of the window in front of you, and ⌥⌘F sends the interviewer’s words to the search service you chose, and up to three of its results to your provider. Generating a profile sends your resume’s and the job posting’s text to your provider once. We receive none of it; the Privacy policy lists the little we do receive.

Where is my API key kept?

In your login Keychain, on your Mac. Hintglass sends each key only to its own host, and we never receive it.

Does Hintglass save my interviews?

Only if you turn on Save transcript in Settings → Saved sessions, which is off by default. It then writes each answered question and its answer, with the screenshots and search sources they used, to a folder on your Mac, and Delete all saved sessions… removes them. Audio is never saved.

Setting up

Which AI providers work?

Tested on Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter and Ollama Cloud. Built to support them all. You bring your own key and pay the provider for what you use. Settings → Connection also has Ollama on your Mac, Mistral, DeepSeek, Groq and xAI built in, and Other for any host; Test connection checks each with your key.

What Macs does it need?

A Mac with macOS 27 on Apple silicon: Apple’s list of Macs that can run macOS 27 starts with the 2020 M1 models. You also need an API key for the AI provider you choose, unless you run Ollama on your Mac, and the speech model for your interview language, which Hintglass installs from Settings.

Does it need a notch?

No. With a notch, the panel hangs just below it, right under the camera; without one, it sits just below the menu bar, at the top centre of your main display.

Which languages does it understand?

Each language Apple’s on-device speech recognition has a model for on your Mac: Settings → Interview language lists them, and both sides of the call are transcribed in the one you choose.

Do I need headphones?

Use them. With headphones, your microphone hears only you, so Hintglass always knows which words are yours and which are the interviewer’s.

Price and getting it

How do I get it?

Hintglass is launching soon: at launch, you download it from this site. Join the waitlist for one email the day it lands.

What does it cost?

At launch, it costs USD 50 per month, plus tax where it applies, as one plan. You also pay your AI provider for what you use.

Is there a free trial?

At launch, yes: one session of 20 minutes, the first that runs without a licence, with nothing to pay and no account to create.

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes: at launch, you cancel with Manage subscription in Settings → Licence, and Hintglass keeps working until the end of the month you have paid for.

Can I get a refund?

At launch, customers in the EU and the UK get a full refund if they ask within 14 days of their first payment. Elsewhere, payments and part periods aren’t refunded, except where the law requires a refund.
